Tips to care for your houseDrainage is a problem that most people will not consider until a problem arises and by then it often has become expensive to fix. Here
are some things a home owner should take a look at to prevent many of the
problems that can occur with water and drainage at your home and property.
- Watch
your house next time it rains. Stand back a little distance, and notice the gutters. Are they overflowing? Stopped up gutters contribute to many wet basement
problems. If they are flowing, do they terminate close to the house? If
they do, a little time to install a drainage system that will move the
water away from your house is a valuable investment.
- Does your
yard have areas of standing water? Standing water will kill grass and
invite trouble with mosquitoes and can be adding additional water to
the house foundation.
- Often minor adjustments in grading are all that is needed to make drastic improvements to your water problems.
Making
sure that water either drains away naturally or is piped away is a
preventive measure you don't want to live without. Remember, whether
you have a basement or a crawlspace, water will contribute to a variety
of problems, including footers failing, mold, concrete floors buckling, and
basement walls caving in. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean
you shouldn't be looking for it.
